The UK Government has been urged to speed up the development of a new Runway at Heathrow

The Airports Commission of UK was established in 2012 for the calibration of runways of South East England. The Commission is in the process of making the report on the capacity of runways of airports. On the other hand, UK government has been urged not to delay making the decision on the runway capacity.

The commission said that the report is due in the next couple of months. The Freight Transport Association (FTA), the campaign group Let Britain Fly and the asset management company SERGO, have all expressed their concerns about the government. They believe that the government will not respond to the report and recommendations made by the commission that will lead to further delay.

Stakeholder’s call

Director of the campaign, Let Britain Fly, Gavin Hayes said that the political deferment is the largest factor that influence the process. The present situation of the airports and their cargo capacity requires the government to hold the moment and respond to the commission’s report very positively in a timely manner. It is necessary to make instant and immediate decisions.

Current situation

Heathrow airport is at the moment running at fullcapacity but there isneed to systemize its cargo process according to the world standards. On the other hand, Gatwick Airport will be full in next five years. However, London’s other small airports will join the party in next ten to fifteen years. The commission has concluded that London Airport will be in great need of newrun way by 2030. It can lead to a very serious situation if thegovernment ignores the report under political influence.

Transport Department concerns

The UK government department for transport said that they are determined to make progress on this vital issue but there is a great need to work on the Airport commission very carefully. After the careful scrutiny of the report, the government will decide the next step.

SERGO is in the favor of Heathrow airport’s expansion but they again demand the government to fully interfere and get on to make the decision. FTA has written to the Prime minister to highlight the importance of air cargo and confirmed that if Heathrow declined this time, it would make the air cargo and logistics even more expensive. FTA has further added that Gatwick Airport is not suitable for cargo operations at all.
