Heathrow is the UK’s largest port accounting for almost 30% of all UK’s export by value outside the EU last year. Overall, the cargo growth was particularly strong to fast-growing markets in Latin America and East Asia, Mexico up to 28%, China up 21% and Brazil up 18%.
UK Government set a plan to boost the UK economy and they planned to build a new airport at Heathrow to boost the cargo. It is the first full-length runway in the south east since the Second World War. This step showed the UK’s open for business credentials. The plan is planned to execute in the early 2017.
The CEO of Heathrow, John Holland-Kays said, “ In October, the Prime Minister sent a clear message to the world that her government would expand Heathrow, showing the Britain is open for cargo business and confident in its future. With the support of communities across the UK, Heathrow is now working at pace to deliver the benefits of Britain’s new runway.
Heathrow cargo value has been growing strongly by an average of 9.5% between 2010 and 2015. The head of Cargo at Heathrow Airport said, “Cargo is a little known but huge part of our operations. In fact, Heathrow is responsible for 29% of all UK non-EU exports, virtually all of which goes in the belly-hold passenger aircraft, making British the largest cargo port.”
There is another massive approach of Heathrow Airport to grow the cargo business towards the new horizons. It is set to welcome its second dedicated cargo-only service today as Air Bridge Cargo Airlines taking its destinations towards South East.
With the help of this new service, the ABC is going to offer 100 tons of additional cargo capacity a week to Heathrow.
These biggest steps taken by the Heathrow Cargo Airport supported by the UK’s government are clearly the signs of massive cargo growth in future.
